Joining in with this popular garden bloggers meme

One of my favourite activities at this time of year is to take the dog for a walk around some local woods. Not only does it give me some exercise, it’s the ultimate de-stressor.

There was so much to see today despite being in the thick of winter. I’ve been granted special permission to bend the rules of the Six on Saturday meme by The Propagator himself. This will give me some time to tidy my garden and find something, or six somethings, to post for another week.

Euonymus europaeus – The Spindle Tree

I love the Spindle Tree. The bright pink fruit casings are incongruous in the more subtle colours of a winter woodland.

Acer campestre – The Field Maple

I have Acer palmatum in pots in my garden but the bright yellow leaves of the native Field Maple hold for a long time and give a really bright glow.

THREE

Umbellifer – ? Hogweed ? Cow Parsnip

It’s easy to get confused by all the native umbellifers. This one has a lovely pink tinge to its oldest petals.

FOUR

Snowberry

There’s a hedge I pass on the way to the woods where the top growth always has big fat white berries. This makes it look like a heavy snowfall is sitting on top of the hedge and makes me smile every year.

FIVE

Harts Tongue Fern

This is my favourite fern. The mid-green sheeny leaves are awesome.

Beech Tree Trunk

The moulds growing on the trunk of this Beech Tree match the colour of the turning Euonymus leaves.

So that’s my first Six on Saturday. Please join in to mark the changes in your garden over the year.

  1. Rules were made to be broken! You are very lucky to have such an array of plants (well trees are plants, aren’t they?) within dog-walking distance. If only ….. But then I don’t have a dog and resident cat doesn’t like being on a lead. Thanks for sharing this selection. And I suppose we also need to thank dog for allowing you to take the photos.

    1. Thank you. The dog enjoyed the walk – took the opportunity to do some more in depth sniffing whilst I was taking photos. She didn’t like the journey over as I’m driving a courtesy car (a Daiwoo matiz) and she could barely fit in the boot!

    1. Thank you. Pressure washing is such a tedious job. We don’t have very good soak away from our paving so it ends up looking like a muddy puddle and takes ages for the debris to wash off. Needs to be done though as they get so slippy .

  2. And yet another entry into my Plants of Interest notebook – spindle tree. I’ve been trying to lure hogweed into my garden since moving to the UK w/o success. I don’t think that’s hogweed, so perhaps cow parsley? I have that same hedge in my garden & it spreads like crazy but yes, is a fun thing to have at this time of year. Hope to see more of your dog walking route as well as of your garden. Great six!

    1. Thanks Lora. If you find the native spindle too bright (and the seed casings are proper hot pink!) Euonymus europaeus ‘Miss Pinkie’ is a more subtle pink.
